Deer is confused by kayakers, what are these floating animals?
When we hike up the river, we hear wildlife shouting warnings to eachother, and if we're lucky, we can see their tails as they run away. When we packraft though, deer, antelope, and boars often just stop and stare at us. They can't smell us (during day wind goes upriver) and they can't seem to identify what we are when we are in our rafts. They wait until we are very close, then often freak out and try to cross the river. But they misjudge our speed, and sometimes we meet them in the middle. I usually film with my phone, which is in my life jacket pocket. So I have to put down my paddle, take it out, and open the camera. It doesn't always work with wet hands, and sometimes the river is too bumpy to stop paddling. This is footage from Junda River in Nantou. Riding down, we saw about 20 large mammals. Mostly deer and antelope. Big fish just pass right under us.
